Given that only a few % of the population will ever get around to filling-in any given petition, the fact that almost every constituency in the whole UK is returning an objection to digital ID cards is quite an achievement for The Starmer Party (TM).
And the petition still has until the end of January 2026 to run!

The Tony Blair Institute is pushing this pretty hard behind the scenes at Downing Street. The Senior Policy Adviser in charge of that push is ... Lewis Goodall's wife.

While I am glad to see #YourParty leaders coming out against #IDCards so quickly and strongly, it does rather undermine the "all policy voted and set by members" stance they have for other anti-bigotry work and combatting transphobia...
Today it's a mandatory digital ID card to prove you have the right to work but in the future you might have to use it to access the NHS, to rent or buy a home, or to access benefits.
It's time to fight back, 'Say No to Digital IDs'.

Starmer's #IDCards makes no sense as a policy.
Reform are dead against it and articulating the problems well (or rather one of their ex Tory MP is).
The Tories don't have a view.
So who will this take votes from? Because if that's what is about it will fail.
Or is it about giving billions more of the public's money to US #BigTech ready for cushy jobs when he's ousted, like Nick Clegg?
Or is he just #authoritarian by nature?

And yes: the national mood *has* changed. We hate and distrust our governments by whole orders of magnitude more than we did when Bliar was in charge.
As I understand it, the major markets for unlawful workers are modern slavers and βgig economyβ workers who rent out their accounts to people who canβt legally work. The former are criminals who will ignore the ID card requirement and the latter will slip through the net as only the original account owner will be ID checked. Starmer must know this is all smoke and mirrors and will be massively unpopular. Itβs like heβs decided heβs going to get kicked out of number 10 and is going scorched-earth on his way out. #ukpolitics #IDCards
How long before the government is selling the National ID Card data to private companies?
How long before private companies are requiring you to use it before they will deal with you?
How long before companies are marrying commercial data with the ID data in order to target you with ads or track your behaviour?
How long before that data is stolen?

If the government has a digital database of every "legitimate" person in the country then they have the means to track you anywhere in view of a camera. They can literally, piece by piece, retrace your steps by means of facial recognition.
And you will have handed them the tools.
