Not even our mirrors stay clean forever! 🧽

Optical engineer Jaime González is checking for large particles on a VLT mirror. This step is part of a periodic cleaning process that keeps the mirrors ultra-precise & super-reflective.

Find out how this is done: https://www.eso.org/public/images/potw2539a/

A perfect mirror image

A perfect mirror image
Most of this image is taken up by the silvery, reflective surface of an enormous mirror. An ESO staff member in all-white, transparent plastic hat covering their head and similar gloves on their hands. They reach out over the mirror surface, something small hidden in the palm of their hands. As they lightly touch the mirror surface, a slightly distorted reflection appears to reach back towards them, showing a near-perfect mirror image on its pristine metal.

Surprising New Images of Pōwehi Black Hole Unveiled — Maunakea Observatories

A series of three images of the supermassive black hole Pōwehi, taken in 2017, 2018, and the newest in 2021, shows surprising changes in the polarization patterns surrounding Pōwehi. Geoffrey Bower, Director of James Clerk Maxwell Telescope (JCMT) on Maunakea, breaks down this discovery and gives a

Just finished reviewing the 4th article in a month as a referee 😮‍💨

And the editor of my own paper is pressing me to resubmit the revision before the deadline 😱
