(citations removed to fit character limit) This article makes the case that, first, this embrace of generative AI, reticent or otherwise, is dissonant to the field's institutional ideals of supporting the public good, wishing to provide access to information that has integrity, and abiding by sustainable practices whenever possible. Second, what is unfortunately not dissonant is the field's quick rationalization that technological solutions are ethical, simply because they illusively meet the immediate needs of staff and community members. I argue that this rationalization happens because library and information science (LIS) practitioners consider technology, their labor, and its interaction to be neutral and in so doing separate themselves from generative AI's material conditions. Third, the utilization of generative AI signals a shift in the responsibility of facilitating ethical labor practices in LIS, operating at some degree for the public good, onto privatized technological solutions that are constantly changing and fetishized. Technology cannot fully substitute the labor of a worker, no matter how much or how quickly we want our field-wide problems of precarity and burnout to be solved. Further, the technology of many public institutions in the United States is generally a decade behind private industry capacity. The reality is that our work has always intersected with technology, and this intersection has material, social, and cultural impacts.

The local library is doing the Repair Cafe!!! This is an initial event. Im hoping we can do something like this monthly once we get it going!!!

Repair Cafes are community events where people bring things to get fixed and maintained for free. Volunteers come to hang out, talk shop, and work on folks' items.

This is a mutual-aid event - So folks might be good at fixing bicycles but arent as good at mending jeans. So they might bring their jeans to get patched and then help tune a bicycle!

While my library has asked if I can help with desktop support (which I'm more than willing to do), I actually really like working on bicycles! So I let them know I could do that, too.

I'm at my bandwidth with creating and organizing things with the Free Fridges and Food Rescue, but I absolutely can join an volunteer on the days of if all I have to do is show up, hang out, and tinker on some repairs!

THIS IS SO EXCITING!!!

Email that states: Hi Once again I have to thank you for sharing amazing ideas with me - thank you! I've been able to partner with the R Board to host our first Repair Cafe, which will be on Thursday, February 12 from 1:30-3:30. They will be supplying folks who can do small machine repairs, like toaster ovens or Instant Pots, and people to repair clothing (tailors/ sewers). Would you be interested in volunteering for the event? I'd love to have someone who could help with software and computer help. l've reached out to IdeaSpace to ask about physically repairing computers, like rebuilding them but I thought software help might be really handy too. Looking forward to hearing from you, -- Thank you, Assistant Branch Manager/ Adult Services Department Head (she/her) Fredericksburg Branch
