“Private payrolls saw their biggest decline in 2½ years during Sept, a further sign of labor market weakening that compounds the data blackout accompanying govt shutdown.

Companies shed a seasonally adjusted 32,000 jobs during the month, the biggest slide since March 2023”

@GottaLaff The growth in ADP private payrolls during the January-September time period is down 64% under Trump. There were over 1 million new hires under Biden during the same period in 2024 while there are only 366,000 under Trump this year.

Reading every headline & lede that invariably starts with “Democrats block GOP bill”, I’d like to remind everyone, the #media especially, that Trump’s party — the #RepublicanParty — controls the #WhiteHouse & both chambers of #Congress.

This shutdown is their doing.

By all accounts #Trump & #Project2025’s #RussVought absolutely wanted it because it consolidates #power under the #ExecutiveBranch, exactly what they have been working for.

Big, yes. Beautiful, no —
'SNAP changes will upend state budgets'

SNAP Changes Will Upend State Budgets - Georgetown Center on Poverty and Inequality

SNAP is a lifeline for more than 42 million people, providing food that stabilizes families and strengthens communities, but the One Big Beautiful Bill Act (OBBBA) of 2025 made seismic changes to the structure of SNAP, shifting costs to states. This analysis maps the impact of OBBBA changes to SNAP on all 50 state budgets, highlighting how much each state’s SNAP costs are expected to rise in the years ahead—both in dollars and as a share of state budgets.

Americans know this story, and it ends in a Trump.
For the next four years Labour are going to be telling us how good things are on paper and like with the Dems, nobody is going to listen because in reality the prices are still going up and we take the brunt of the 'tough choices'

Labour just doesn’t get it: workers feel poorer than ever. Is it any wonder Reform is rising? | Sharon Graham

Until the government starts tacking in a radically new direction, it will continue crashing in the polls. It could – and must – act differently, says Sharon Graham, general secretary of Unite

This is what should be done, but it won't be, and it will be the voters that take the brunt of the Tough Choices and out of spite they'll vote for Nigel, or, as we saw from the US, they just won't bother to vote at all.

So long as growth remains anaemic, the only option other than economic
deregulation is public investment. The government can restore our public
services without hiking the taxes of everyday workers. Unite has looked at
proposals from academic experts that together would raise more than £50bn
a year. From taxing the wealth of the top 1% at an annual rate of 1%, to
equalising capital gains tax with income tax rates and extending national
insurance to apply to investment income, the government has options. This
is what Starmer should be proposing in his speech to conference. But he will
not. All these solutions require a departure from the failed economic norms
of the last generation.

#RussVought, who also directed the White House #OMB in Trump’s first term, had spent 4 years in exile from power. He worked through Joe #Biden’s presidency from an old rowhouse near the Capitol, where he complained of pigeons infesting his ceiling & coordinated with other #Trump loyalists to draw up sweeping, detailed plans for a comeback.

#RussVought had carefully analyzed mistakes from the first term. And he had laid out steps to achieve the long-sought conservative goal of a president with dramatically expanded #authority over the #ExecutiveBranch, including the #power to cut off #spending, #fire employees, control #independent #FederalAgencies & #deregulate the #economy.

#Musk, who spent >$250M to help elect #Trump, had celebrity, access to the president & political capital that the budget director could never hope for.

According to Deutsche Bank, the AI bubble is just that — an AI bubble. And it's masking an economy that is in bad shape.

Could be.

Deutsche Bank Issues Grim Warning for AI Industry

Deutsche Bank is warning that AI spending won't "remain parabolic," or continue to increase exponentially, a dire warning for the future.

The AI boom is unsustainable unless tech spending goes ‘parabolic,’ Deutsche Bank warns: ‘This is highly unlikely’ | Fortune

“In the absence of tech-related spending, the U.S. would be close to, or in, recession this year,” George Saravelos says.

"When we picture the history of money, many imagine barter leading naturally to coins, then paper bills, then cards and digital balances. But new research led by University at Albany Anthropology Professor Robert M. Rosenswig shows that this familiar narrative doesn't hold up—and that lessons from ancient wooden and bone tally sticks matter for how we understand money today.

His conclusion: Orthodox economics, which treats money primarily as a medium of exchange, does not fit the evidence. Tally sticks, he argues, suggest that money originates with governments as a system of accounting and taxation.

Rosenswig's study, "Ancient Tally Sticks Explain the Nature of Modern Government Money," published in the Journal of Economic Issues, shows that tally sticks—independently invented in England, China and the Maya world—were consistently used by state officials to record and cancel tax or tribute obligations.

"The historical record shows that barter doesn't precede the creation of financial money," Rosenswig said. "Tally sticks remind us that money is not a scarce commodity but an accounting system rooted in political authority.""
