The web is not a community space. It has great and shitty content. And we disagree re what to categorize as either. It's whatever we want on our own sites. It works because amidst everything from everyone, you can see what you want but avoid what you don't. That's how huge decentralized networks work.
Until we start to think of the #SocialWeb in the same way and stop judging it based on the goals and standards of a corporate platform, we're fucked.
#bluesky fails cause it pretends to be both.
Been thinking about something along these lines with regard to complaints about Mastodon being too bossy. Yes, there are bossy people here, fewer than there were, but still. And, you are free to ignore them.
The idea that you need to leave the platform because someone tells you to do something you don't want to do imagines that the you have no agency. You do. Block people, if they are annoying. Make your experience whatever you want. It's just a platform.
someday we might treat the worst of them like we do the "die slur" crowd. tell them to move and then defederate their servers. maybe.
