When they cancelled Jimmy Kimmel, Disney saw a 436 percent increase in streaming cancellations, leading to a loss of 1.7 million subscribers, an insider has told journalist Marisa Kabas.

Disney+ Subscribers Face a Wave of Cancellations

Between September 17 and 23, 2025, 1.7 million users canceled their subscriptions to Disney+, Hulu, and ESPN+. The reason was the suspension of Jimmy Kimmel following a controversial remark. This led to a 436 percent increase in cancellations. Despite the show's resumption after six days, the situation has jeopardized Disney's growth targets. Investors are now demanding insight into internal decisions, as separate subscriber numbers are no longer being disclosed. The post Disney+ Subscribers Fac

@randahl This is unfortunately only a drop in the bucket. I was at Hulu until 2024, and the sub count then was ~50M; it is also a US-only service, almost by definition a smaller subscriber base than D+, which is global.

At best, this is maybe 2-3% of total subs—which isn't nothing, and I'm thoroughly in favor of hitting craven corporations exactly where it hurts—but it's unlikely to make a sizable dent in revenue. It was nonetheless spectacular to watch.

@randahl That headline is very hard to parse. No, they are not canceling a bunch of shows. Subscribers are canceling. So it's not like any subscriber is standing there having to deal with a shit ton of cancellations.

But the article does make it sound like a big pain in the ass for Disney.

@randahl they will just keep increasing the sub cost to make up the shortfall. There are people who will keep D+ no matter how much it costs. Disney's gonna be okay.

@randahl - Don't get entertained at Disney land and Disney world while on Vacation for the duration of this TACO Administration and watch these two dumpsites crumble.

@randahl cancel #amazon. Write angry letters to tcook@apple.com to ask him to bring back the „ICE Block“ App. Don’t buy Tesla, don’t subcribe to starlink.

@randahl Large companies cannot continue to do everything with impunity, such as following their leader. That will cost the company dearly. The people have a weapon—turn off the revenue tap.

Keep boycotting!

@randahl ✊ Yes! Boycott works. But people are stuck in their comfort zone. They keep using Meta platforms, buying Teslas, buying through Amazon and so on.
The power of the broligarchy, Joker included, is based on money and more specifically on company share values. This value is probably highly overestimated compared to their 'real' value AND people have the power to take it down through boycott.

But what they keep saying is (apart from those who praise Joker), "you know, it's easier for us"

@thierry_van_kerm "THE" people don't exist. Tesla is another good example that #boycott works.
After installing one of their biggest factories in Germany, they were on the top. After Musk's fascist politics and #boycottTesla, they fell: a plunge of 49% in spring, struggle and dropping stocks in Europe again now. And the prices for used Teslas fall immensely because nobody wants to drive them!

@NatureMC @randahl I'm afraid the wind has turned since May. Musk being almost silent on the political scene, people forgot he is a dangerous person.
What I read about Tesla's value is pretty recent, I'm afraid

@thierry_van_kerm The electrec article *IS* recent. 11 days old.
And these figures are recent, the article is just 2 h out: https://www.msn.com/en-us/autos/electric-cars/tesla-s-german-car-sales-fall-in-september-though-wider-ev-sales-jump/ar-AA1NWMom

And no, he is not silent, he tries massively to influence/finance the ultra-right in Europe for the next elections, like the AfD in Germany.

@NatureMC @randahl Agreed. At the same time, it seems Tesla's share values are at a pick. And it seems I see more and more Teslas in Belgium and France. Sadly.
But let's keep boycotting! ✊
