As Molly Olmstead notes, Pope Leo has gotten Republican knickers atwist by saying the following — by reiterating points made by his predecessors, since they're basic points of Catholic teaching:

"Someone who says 'I’m against abortion' but says 'I’m in favor of the death penalty' is not really pro-life."
