Austria's military switches from Microsoft Office to LibreOffice - The Document Foundation Blog

Like we’re seeing in Schleswig-Holstein, Denmark and many other government bodies and organisations, the Austrian military (Bundesheer) has migrated 16,000 PCs from Microsoft Office to LibreOffice. @libreoffice

Good for them !!
Up here 🇨🇦 almost everything used is prorpietary Windows software.
Although I have seen various moves to some open source software (Experimental) and some moves to Linux (Experimental).

@libreoffice The original article at @heisec shows well how the question aroused of the cloud use. They seem to have used already Linux as OS: "the Austrian Armed Forces did not use Microsoft's email or collaboration solutions, but self-hosted Linux servers with Samba. Nevertheless, Microsoft Office was deeply embedded in the IT workflows." https://www.heise.de/en/news/Austria-s-armed-forces-switch-to-LibreOffice-10660761.html

Austria's armed forces switch to LibreOffice

The Austrian Armed Forces have been preparing for the switch to LibreOffice for a long time. Other LibreOffice users will also benefit from this.

@libreoffice Amazing seeing more orgs move over to LibreOffice, Amazing seeing full military sectors moving over as well. Most likely saved so much money per year as well.

@libreoffice Many more need to do it droves. Ridiculous to paying a subscription for apps most people rarely use except to update their resume maybe once in a blue moon and a student don’t need it either just to write essays and school reports.

@libreoffice The PR didn't tell if they plan to leave Windows as well. Otherwise it's pointless security wise.

The question now arose with the cloud.

@laurenternes Not pointless. Perhaps not doing everything at once. Perhaps requiring additional care (which I would already expect of an organization like the military).

It's far easier to change one thing at a time, evaluate, determine what the pain points are, adjust and move forward from there; than to uproot everything at once and realize that something don't meet a fundamental need.

Let's please not fall into the trap of demanding absolute perfection in order to do better.
