Shakur’s case had long been a thorny issue in the fraught relations between the US & Cuba. US authorities, including Trump during his first term in office, had demanded her return from the communist nation for decades.
In her telling, & in the minds of her supporters, she was being pursued for crimes she didn’t commit, or which were justified. The FBI put Shakur on its list of “most wanted terrorists.”
A member of the #BlackPanther Party & #BLA, Shakur & 2 others were involved in a gunfight w/NJ State Police Troopers following a highway traffic stop on May 2, 1973.
…#AssataShakur maintained in her writings from Cuba over the years that she didn’t shoot anyone & had her hands in the air when she was wounded during the gunfire [forensic analysis bears this out].
Shakur was found guilty of murder, armed robbery & other crimes in 1977 & was sentenced to life in prison, only to escape in Nov 1979.
