New #CDC Director Is Fired, #Trump White House Says

#SusanMonarez was said to have refused to adopt #Health Secretary #RFKJr.’s stance on #vaccination policy.

The White House said late Wednesday that it had fired Susan Monarez, the new director of the Centers for Disease Control & Prevention, after a tense confrontation in which Health Secretary Robert F. Kennedy Jr. tried to remove her from her position & she refused to resign.

Dr. #SusanMonarez, an #InfectiousDisease researcher, was sworn in just a month ago by #RFKJr, but had clashed with him over #vaccine policy…. 4 other high-profile #CDC officials quit en masse, apparently in frustration over vaccine #policy & RFKJr’s leadership.

Because Dr. Monarez had been confirmed by the #Senate — previous CDC directors were not subject to such confirmation — she served at the pleasure of the Trump. RFKJr most likely did not have the authority to dismiss her.

The new shots from Pfizer, Moderna & Novavax are approved for all #seniors. But the #FDA narrowed their use for younger #adults & #children to those with at least 1 high-risk #health condition, such as #asthma or #obesity. That presents new barriers to access for millions of Americans who’d have to prove their risk -- & millions more who may want to get vaccinated & suddenly no longer qualify.

Additionally, Pfizer’s #vaccine will no longer be available for any child underage 5, after the #FDA said it was revoking the shot’s emergency authorization for that age group.
Parents will still be able to seek out shots from rival drugmaker #Moderna, the other
maker of #mRNA #vaccines, which has full FDA approval for #children as young as 6 months. But the company’s Spikevax vaccine is only approved for children w/at least one serious #health problem.
