If you’re looking for something to do this weekend, swing by the top of my driveway for the 7th Annual Potato Festival. Wait, what? Not potatoes? But… if not potato, why potato shaped?

Poison Pigskin Puffballs
[Scleroderma citrinum]

Several puffballs are growing tightly next to each other. They look like a pile out of potatoes and are the same species as in the other photos. They are lumpy and more misshapen than the others. They also have several small chunks bitten out of them by curious critters.

Looking straight down on three oval-shaped puffball mushrooms, each about 1 ½ long. They look like potatoes with sturdy speckled pitted tan skin with dark blotches. There are no stems. The age of the puffball has caused some of the inner spores to turn a dark green and appear in several spots. On one of the mushrooms the skin at the top has split where some of the spores have erupted out. They are growing on a ground combination of pebbles and fallen woody debris.

The good news: my shiitake mushroom log finally grew mushrooms!

The bad news: they aren’t shiitakes.

Closeup of a cut log standing vertical on a wet forest floor. The log is about 5 inches wide and 2 ½ feet high, though only the top 18 inches are shown. There are several dime-sized holes drilled into the log surrounded by dried wax that line the right side of the log like buttons. Nothing is coming out of any of the holes. At the top of the hole are a clump of False Turkey Tail mushrooms, like tiny shelves. They are tan with brown bands. There are about 15 of them. The log is leaning on the trunk of a living tree behind it.
