If this is your first time on the #Fediverse, the instance (server) that you are on, may not be all that suitable and that is fine. It's OK to change.
Check out https://fedidb.com/ or https://fediverse.observer/ for different servers.
Avoid the 'official' Mastodon servers (mastodon.social and mastodon.online) where possible. Moderation is lacking to say the least.
Where possible, try to add #AltText to media that you add. This will help users that have a visual impairment to 'see' the picture or video. A little goes a long way.
#Mastodon is NOT the #Fediverse - There are other platforms which have the underlying technology (ActivityPub). Some of those are #Pixelfed, #Sharkey, #Lemmy, #NodeBB, and some applications have plugins/add-ons that enable AP, such as #WordPress
#Hashtags are your friend. There is no algorithm with the Fediverse to "de-rank" posts with too little or too many hashtags.
Have a #introduction post. It's an extension to your bio that should tell users who you are and why they should follow you.
