The #Trump admin is deporting a planeload of around 100 #Iranians back to #Iran from the #US, acc/to 2 senior Iranian ofcls involved in the negotiations & a US ofcl with knowledge of the plans.
Iranian ofcls said that the plane, a US chartered flight, took off from Louisiana on Monday night & was scheduled to arrive in Iran by way of Qatar sometime Tues. The US ofcl confirmed that plans for the flight were in the final stages.…
For decades, the #UnitedStates had given shelter to #Iranians fleeing their homeland, which has one of the harshest #HumanRights records in the world. #Iran persecutes #WomensRights activists, #PoliticalDissidents, #journalists & #lawyers, #religious minorities & members of the #LGBTQ community, among others. [just like #Trump.]
The identities of the #Iranians & their reasons for trying to immigrate to the #US were not immediately clear. In the past several years, there has been an increase in Iranian migrants arriving at the southern US border & crossing illegally, including many who have claimed fear of persecution back home for their #political & #religious beliefs.

The #US had long hesitated or had trouble deporting immigrants to certain countries like #Iran because of a lack of regularized diplomatic relations & an inability to get travel documents in a timely manner. That had forced US ofcls to either hold immigrants in detention for long periods or release them into the US. The US deported just >2 dozen Iranians back to the country in 2024, the highest total for years…. #Trump is deporting ~100.
In addition to inflicting political #oppression, #Iran is in the throes of an #economic & #energy #crisis with plunging currency, sky-high #inflation, #unemployment, & #water & #power cuts. The economic situation is bound to get even worse with the return of #UN Security Council #sanctions that went into effect on Saturday.
