Yesterday I was singing the praises of #Jellyfin with someone in my life and they went: "Sounds great. It's a pity it cannot be connected to Google Drive or iCloud".

Fedi friends, this sentence sent actual shivers down my spine. I have no poker face and I may have even blurted out "ew why?" Then I said: "you know that the cloud is basically someone else's computer, right?"

So yes, I'm a certified Fediverse person now (in case there were any doubts).

And I just installed Jellyfin YAY 🥳

@_elena Welcome, switched to Jellyfin from Plex when they started sending "fun" mails of what people were watching on plex to their contacts. Making it very obvious that they track whatever you watch. Jellyfin is great, hope you enjoy it as much as I have. :)

@_elena I actually use a mounted folder from Filen.io to play music videos from. The same COULD be done with other cloud drives, but I’m not doing it as a backup solution. Just as an easy way of getting to my little collection of videos whether I have Jellyfin nearby or not. Anything that lets you mount a cloud drive locally can do the same thing, but as has been pointed out already, it is expensive and impractical for movie collections.

@_elena oooh, what was your main reason to go to Jellyfin, and not Emby or Plex (if I may ask)?

@_elena Saw this article yesterday and it was an eye opener how much personal data streaming platforms share with 3rd parties. Even more reason to try Jellyfin.

Table of the top 20 apps sharing up to 68% of personal data with 3rd parties.

@_elena Got HDD for my old comp month ago, put Yunohost and Jellyfin and few other things like Libretranslate.
Jellyfin is really nice and having smart tv means I can leave my pc to rest while watching preloaded stuff from my personal server at home or using guests smart tv or just on phone. Same goes to sharing with my family members.
I had experience setting up Freebsd but didn't expect yunohost be so simple, so thanks for shout out months earlier! blobcat

@_elena keep up the good evangelisation! What's your use case for Jellyfin? Thinking of deploying it at some point.

@john_fisherman freedom from the tyranny of streaming services! and to resurrect my music library which has been languishing on an external drive since iTunes went bust

@_elena I read ya! SO MANY people wanting to do that, it's great news. It would be awesome to have a simple guide for noobs, somewhere, with nerds like us to assist the transition. Ah, the internet!

@john_fisherman I literally just installed it, but maybe once I master it I will write a guide for non-techies (like myself)

@_elena that, or simply share a good one that is already written. This seems like the kind of thing that would work really nicely on a Wiki-kind of collaborative effort.

@_elena @peach

Jellyfin is awesome for movies, and quite ok for music.

If you care about gapless audio between tracks, on android you can use finamp client

@_elena yeah it's not a backup if you use it as source, than it's just the source ha
Also if they watch copyrighted media I really hope they don't put it in the cloud...

@leberschnitzel they said "to have a backup in case you lose the data on your drive"...

to which I responded that I can regularly sync folders to a backup drive using Carbon Copy Cloner...

@_elena I thankfully kept all my old CDs - I need to get them digitized and do the same I think.
