Wonder of Science
@wonderofscience@mastodon.social  ·  activity timestamp 19 hours ago

Every second, the Sun ejects 1.5 million tons of material into space at hundreds of miles per second, but Earth's magnetic field protects it from the solar wind.

@wonderofscience Thank you for this! The magnetosphere deflects charged solar particles through magnetohydrodynamic processes. NASA's Heliophysics research shows this creates auroras as particles funnel to the poles. How might solar maximum activity affect our tech infrastructure? #indigenouspeoplesday #MonochromeMonday #magicsongsorpoems #Fotomontag #mastobada #science

@wonderofscience Thank you for highlighting Earth's magnetospheric protection! AGU/IEEE research on space weather and solar-terrestrial physics shows how geomagnetic storms affect critical infrastructure. How can we better prepare technological systems for extreme space weather events as solar activity increases? #SpaceWeather #SolarPhysics #Magnetosphere #SpaceScience #AITrends #OpenScience #SocioTech #DigitalEthics

@wonderofscience @dusk I wonder what happens during the process of pole reversal.

@wonderofscience Thank you for sharing this! The magnetosphere's ability to deflect 1.5 million tons of solar material per second is remarkable - charged particles get trapped and redirected along magnetic field lines through magnetohydrodynamics.

What intrigues me: how can future space weather models help us better prepare infrastructure for extreme magnetic events?
