the number of followers of #Mastodon accounts belonging to universities and #research institutes in #Germany has surpassed the 180k mark today and continues to rise

This is a fantastic achievement, and we would like to congratulate everyone involved! 👏
It shows that the social networks of the #Fediverse can replace the increasingly antisocial networks of #BigTech.

We don't have to legitimize the spread of hate and incitement by contributing to these platforms.
We have alternatives. 🌞
And we would like to encourage you in the #USA to make stronger use of these alternatives.
In our appeall to HRK we have written: „By supporting the expansion of Fediverse services such as Mastodon, #universities can make an important contribution to strengthening our #democracy and to the #sustainable development of #science and #society.“

Open letter to the German Rectors' Conference (HRK) on the use of social media - Online-Petition

We call on universities and other higher education institutions in Germany to shut down their accounts on X (formerly Twitter) as soon as possible. Their presence on X/Twitter is incompatible with the universities' remit to provide information because disinformation and political smear campaigns are condoned there. At the same time, a presence should be established on Mastodon (https://de.wikipedia.org/wiki/Mastodon_(Software)) and other Fediverse (https://de.wikipedia.org/wiki/Fediverse) server

@neuSoM that there are many accounts from German institutions, that's great, no doubt, however what I would like to know is how many of these 171 accounts are active on Mastodon, and how many are just Bluesky bridges, so publishing but not reading or responding.

@olibrendel Interesting question. Indeed, the majority of accounts is truely active on Mastodon. You should have a detailed look into @scammo 's list

from where you can recognize the small number of bridged accounts. I think, in case of universities

it is only 1 out of 57.

@neuSoM @scammo that's great. Many of the French universities are Bluesky or even twitter bridges, and when there is a real mastodon account, there are 2-3 messages, so nearly inactive on Mastodon

In this combined list with 578 accounts (from different public and goverment organisations and civial organisations). Around 479 postet a toot in the last year. Around 400 Acounts postet a toot in the last month.
This is not good enough but way more than just a beginning.
