End the precarious situation of Privatdozent:innen,
i.e. non-salaried senior researchers and lecturers!
For sustainable and internationally competitive science in Germany
Open letter from the initiative PD Prekär
Do you work without a salary and without social security? Do you commute to work for years without an employment contract, without an office, and without a permanent email address, paying for travel and accommodation out of your own pocket? Do you think such working conditions are possible in Germany? No? Then you may be surprised: This is what so-called Privatdozenten (PDs) – highly qualified, experienced academics who have completed their habilitation – have been doing at German universities for decades. They supervise and train students and doctoral candidates, teach and maintain teaching standards when teaching staff are in short supply. Free of charge, at their own expense. Without a contract, without security, and alongside their research and temporary research projects.
The initiative PD Prekär (https://pdprekaer.jimdosite.com) was founded to draw attention to these conditions and to put forward proposals for improvement.
