" #Iran must move its capital from #Tehran, says president as water crisis worsens"

'“Last year, the rainfall was 140mm, while the standard is 260mm; that means rainfall has fallen by about 50 to 60%...” Some recent estimates put the rainfall in 2025 at just below 100mm'

There's been assertions that the #climateCrisis #climateChange would lead to large scale migrations, and I fear it's just the beginning. Internal displacement now, cross-border in the decades ahead

Masoud Pezeshkian says subsidence is also ‘a disaster’ in city of 10 million, which consumes quarter of Iran’s water

@benroyce I don't think we will have to wait decades for global displacement and water wars

@benroyce It's a sad day when Iran is reacting more rationally to climate change than the US is

@benroyce ooppps.... I guess all the money they spent building up a military and trying to acquire nukes didn't pay off. This is exactly how the US screws these islamo-fascist chumps. Scare them into thinking and wasting resources on stuff they don't need, destroy what they do get when it looks threatening enough, and end up without muxh of anything to help their people. It's called poor planning!

@benroyce Exactly the sort of population movements the archaeological record shows have taken place in the past, due to climate changes.

@IanDSmith

we had no idea how good we had it, and we pissed it away because... oil company profits

i don't mean to belittle all of our other problems and suffering, but #climateChange will make our children and grandchildren suffer mightily

we failed them. we could have acted, we did not

they will curse us

they should

@benroyce @IanDSmith

As bad as kids today are going to have it, it's only going to be worse for their kids, and theirs, and theirs, and theirs..... Likely for 30 or so generations

That's IF we actually started doing something about Anthropogenic Global Climate Change today, and redoubled our efforts tomorrow, and again the day after, etc.....

It took us about 150-200 years to really fk up out planet.

If we decide to try to unfk it, it's going to take much longer to accomplish.

If.

It's like bike lanes. The best time to have started building them was 30 years ago. The 2nd best time is right fkn now!

Happy Friday eh

@benroyce Noticing my kid’s scheming face after telling her about the environmental toll of AI chatbots I said, “Are you plotting to destroy the world? Or save it?” But then I remembered that’s my job, not hers. Depending on your kids to save you from the mess you created is despicable. I should probably dedicate the rest of my life to this, for their sake.

@benroyce my uncle came back from Africa back in the early 90s after 15 years living in various countries. He said back then water will be more valuable than gold and will cause wars and displacement and hunger across the world.

@woollypigs

well that problem is going global in the decades ahead

we could have done something

we didn't

future generations will hate us for not doing anything about it

i don't blame them

(the royal "us", not us individuals who understood the problem but were powerless to do anything about it, even us who tried to do something, but were stopped because oil companies had to preserve their profits)
