my Catholic school was very Vatican II, so theology debates were de rigeur. one debate was, should we extend the Golden Rule to animals, especially primates.

you can imagine the twists & turns of that, but it came down to St Francis of Assissi & Jane Goddall. we agreed her work could be seen as an extension of his ethics & the Golden Rule.
