Since today is #shutdown day…

People advocating for the abolishment of government, instead substituting cooperation, common ownership, pooling of resources, and common agreement on rules on how to use said resources…are actually advocating for a different form of government.

To me, “government” is an agreed-upon set of rules for a community, that is then delegated to a subset of the community to execute and enforce. Unless you’re talking about authoritarianism or occupation, “government” is made up of members of the group being governed. Government is not a “them”; government is “us”.

We can have good government or bad government, but for entirely practical reasons, any group of people living together will have to agree on common rules to get along; and when the group gets large enough, they will need to delegate the execution and enforcement of said rules to a smaller group of people and…well, now they have a government.

“So break them up into smaller groups that don’t need to delegate execution and enforcement”, I hear you say.

Yes, but unless each subgroup lives far enough away from other subgroups that they neither trade nor share resources, you will eventually end up with some delegated body that enforces *intergroup* rules. And…voila, you have a federal government.

We shouldn’t be afraid to form governments. Good governments are boring, predictable, administrative affairs that are nothing more than clearinghouses for the will of the people.
