If Trump can seize Chinese companies like Tiktok and sell them to his major donors at a 90% discount, then American companies have no right to cry foul when the EU gets rid of the America First Copyright Directive and lets Europeans choose to get their software, updates, and hardware from European companies.

I think Apple on the other big US tech zaitbatsus really, really, don't understand the European mentality.

When they sent this kind of ultimatum, your average European citizen reaction is not "I need to write to my representative so they work on removing this law and preventing iPhones being taken out of the market", but "what the hell? We need to ban iPhone sales ASAP If they refuse to follow the local laws". What they are doing is to put people who couldn't care less about third party marketplaces against them, not putting pressure on politicians

@pluralistic in the case they make true on their threat: where does the money/consume go? Exactly - to their competitors. Not only would they voluntarily give up an entire well paying market & sales volume, they would strengthen their competitors. Double loss in one go. I think they are mistaking EU for as gullible as maga's - we are not there yet. We are not yet lacerated by fear.

@pluralistic I don't think we need iPhones at all. There are MANY better alternatives - Murena smartphones, Fairphone, Volla, Nothing, Jolla, ...

Didn't they already try this over the Lightning/USB issue and then backed down?

@a_cubed @pluralistic @cmsdengl Seeing as something like 80% of consumer spending in the USA is now limited to/powered by 10% of the population, there is an ever shrinking population in their largest market than can afford to purchase their products. This is not the case (yet) in the EU, therefore Apple needs the European markets waaaaaaaay more than the European market needs Apple. Europe hopefully recognizes their position of strength in this dynamic and doesn't back down. As a matter of fact, they should look at their wish list and ask for more.

@pluralistic If US companies want to sell in the EU they'd better learn to sell us what *we* want, not what *they* want us to want.
