Home hides in a quiet corner of the #MilkyWay, a vast spiral galaxy 100,000 light-years wide with arms like luminous highways. #Earth rests in the #OrionArm, a modest spur between #Sagittarius and #Perseus, marked by the #OrionNebula and the #Pleiades cluster. There, about two-thirds from the galactic center, a yellow star glows—the #Sun. One among roughly 400 billion #stars, it shelters the only world we know, the fragile speck where every human story unfolds. #Science #Physics #Astrodon #Space

This image shows a labeled illustration of the Milky Way galaxy. At the top, the text says: "If you ever get lost in the Milky Way, this map will guide you back home." The galaxy is drawn as a spiral with its major arms, nebulae, star clusters, and other features marked. Near the bottom, a small yellow dot labeled "Sun" indicates the location of our solar system within the Orion Arm. There is also a small inset diagram in the lower left corner showing another view of the galaxy.

Milky Way - Wikipedia

The Milky Way is our galactic home, part of the story of how we came to be. Astronomers have learned that it’s a large spiral galaxy, similar to many others, but also different in ways that reflect its unique history. Living inside the Milky Way gives us a close-up view of its structure and contents, which we can’t do for other galaxies. At the same time, this perspective makes it difficult for astronomers to obtain a complete picture of galactic structure. Modern research on the Milky Way refines our understanding of how the galaxy formed and what continues to shape our galactic home.
