Indian forests’ health in decline: IIT paper shows carbon sequestration dropped by up to 12%

A study by IIT Kharagpur reveals that despite an increase in India's green cover, the health of its forests is declining due to climate stress, reducing their carbon sequestration ability by 5-12%. The research highlights that warming and drying conditions, compounded by wildfires and deforestation, are weakening forests, particularly in the Eastern Himalayas and Western Ghats, threatening their role as carbon sinks.
