i fixed a computer this week. this is the 1960s IBM 1401 at the Computer History Museum in California.

a computer the size of an upright piano. the design is very mid-century, with dark grey panels spaced at regular intervals along with a single pale blue and narrow horizontal panel. on the left is a control panel covered with buttons, indicator lights, switches, and knobs. two of the dark grey panels have been tilted forward out of the machine, revealing wire-wrapped backplanes full of woven yellow wire. a modern 4-channel digital oscilloscope rests in front on a small wooden table, and four wires emerge from it and disappear into one of the backplanes. behind the computer, a rank of fridge-sized tape units stand guard.
