Historically, the people of a nation seldom knowingly and willingly choose a king or emperor.

What usually happens is that someone simply assumes the role, and those in government go along with it. Meanwhile, those who weren’t paying attention wake up one morning to discover they now have a king or emperor — and by then, it’s far too late to do anything about it.

It is not too late yet, but it is getting close.
