when crossing into canada by car, do you have to go thru US customs/etc, or are you pmuch just dealing with Canadian officials?

i know things can change, but thinking about potential escape routes and wanna know what the current situation is like

@lina crossing by car from Detroit to Windsor, there have so far been no us exit controls. Canadian border services want to know your travel plans. They search a few cars, probably partly at random and partly on suspicion. If you're importing anything or have anything to declare or need to do visa things it gets more complicated.

As long as your story is unsurprising and matches your appearance, I would expect little trouble. Do have specific information for all the obvious questions: know your return-to-us date (and how many days you'll be in canada, and make sure they match), know where you're sleeping tonight including address and phone number, have a plausible itinerary. Preferably have this all printed on paper so you're not unlocking your phone to answer. Visiting friends is fine, but don't be there on romance. Make sure the story matches the visible contents of your vehicle.

Unfortunately it would be fairly straightforward to add departure checkpoints, at all the crossings I've experienced.

@lina Customs only cares about what's in your suitcase. It's immigration who decides whether you can enter or not. The bigger question, can you walk across the border, let's say Washington, and ask for political asylum, given the state of things?

@Fat_Farang
for me personally, the idea would be get into canada under the guise of "just visiting for a couple weeks" and then figure out where to go from there. don't wanna stay in canada, but it helps to have a potential place where we could safely figure out next steps. i'm lucky that i work remotely and ideally can avoid needing to seek asylum, though. not sure about options for people who need to seek that route.

@lina

Customs is to enter a country, though things like the Berlin wall and the Korean Demilitarised zone belie that fact so, keep checking.

@lina just Canadian officials when going into Canada, although you might have to answer questions about what you’re doing and how long you’ll be staying
