Globally, according to #UNWomen and the #UNOfficeOnDrugsAndCrime, around 51,100 #women and #girls were intentionally killed by an intimate partner or family member in 2023—that’s an average of 140 #victims every single day
OR ONE EVERY 10 MINUTES !!!
These #murders account for 60% of all female homicides worldwide, whereas only about 12% of male homicide victims are killed by someone close to them.

Regional snapshots:
• #Afrika has the highest number and rate of these killings, with approximately 21,700 women killed by close ones in 2023 , 2.9 per 100,000 women.  
• Rates in the #Americas and #Oceania stand at about 1.6 and 1.5 per 100,000, respectively.  
• #Asia registers around 0.8, and #Europe the lowest with 0.6 per 100,000 women.

it’s the most dangerous place for #women shaped by patriarchal norms, impunity & systemic failure !!
This is not random it’s #gendered. These #murders speak to #PowerImbalances harmful stereotypes & the fatal consequences of societal acceptance of #violence.
A death every 10 minutes… this can’t be just a statistic; each #victim had a story, a future, a life cruelly cut short.

Many had tried to escape. In several countries (#France, #SouthAfrica, #Colombia), up to 37% of victims had previously reported violence before being killed left unheard and vulnerable.
#prevention is possible. This isn’t inevitability it’s preventability, with stronger laws, protective systems, societal shifts.
To governments and institutions: invest in shelters, enforce #DomesticViolence laws, ensure swift #protection and #justice no more excuses !!

I went to high school in a very Evangelical part of the country.
A high school friend confided in me that he had a sister who was murdered by her boyfriend because he became convinced that she was Satan.
I have since come to find out that such killings are far more common than most people realize. The media doesn't make a big deal about this because it would make Christianity look bad.
We are a network of scientists, developers and organizations building the next generation of digital spaces for open science.
