Pluralistic: The enshittification of solar (and how to stop it) (23 Sep 2025)

A rooftop solar installation. Behind the roof rages a blazing forest fire. Reflected in the solar panels is the poop emoji from the cover of my book 'Enshittification,' which has angry eyebrows and a black, grawlix-filled bar across its mouth."

@pluralistic Thank you for helping solar power get to people. As you share, the fossil fuel and technology sectors are trying to add choke points to solar power systems. #solar, #solarpunk, #offgridsolar, #balconysolar, #growyourown, #solarpower, #solarpanels

i’m super excited to share that i’m joining Mozilla as chief technology officer. in some ways, a new beginning. in others, the continuation of a story i’ve been writing my whole life. my grandfather started a small radio station in cagayan de oro in the philippines (what became the Radio Mindanao Network, Inc.). he set up in the town square. farmers came down from the mountains to sell at the market—hours away. before heading home, my grandfather handed them the microphone so they could tell their families, on the radio, they were on their way. it was simple, but powerful. tech not as a profit machine, but as a public good. a way of carrying voices, stitching a community closer, making daily life a little more human. i’ve been chasing that spirit ever since. at Twitter, i saw what it meant to connect the world in real time. at the Democratic National Committee, i saw how tech could organize and mobilize people toward change. with Medic, i saw how digital tools could bring healthcare to the hardest-to-reach places. as an armenian, i’ve been especially proud to work with Tumo Center for Creative Technologies, a free after-school program teaching teens tech and creativity. it started small, but became a global movement—proof that local ideas can inspire the world. at Emerson Collective, i saw how philanthropy, policy, and tech could come together to push systemic change. and most recently, through Technically Optimistic, i’ve been wrestling with the biggest question of all: where does power sit, and how can we use it with care? each step has taught me the same thing: tech is never neutral. it can open doors—or close them. it can connect us—or divide us. it can concentrate power in a few—or expand agency and possibility for the many. and in this moment, we don’t get to stand on the sidelines. that’s what brings me to Mozilla. because good enough isn’t good enough. we can’t just talk about what tech could be—we have to build it. we have to ship products, invest in companies, write grants, and bring communities together. not to offer “alternatives,” but to deliver the best products and tech that earns trust. tech people choose because it makes their lives richer, safer, more human. AI makes these questions urgent right now, but it’s bigger than AI. it’s about the foundations. the web. data. information. the tools we depend on and shapes our lives. if we get those right, everything else follows. and that’s where i’d love your help. we can’t do this alone. it takes all of us—pooling ideas, pooling resources, pooling imagination. a kind of rebel-alliance economics—dreamers and builders on shared belief, creating something bigger than any of us. so, if you’re working on these foundations—if you’re building, researching, organizing, or imagining what comes next—let’s talk. let’s dream. let’s build. this is our moment to shape the future together. because the future of technology shouldn’t belong to a few. it should belong to all of us. | 136 comments on LinkedIn

Tech got what it wanted by electing Trump. A year later, it looks more like a suicide pact.
